“Port Wine Stains”
Many people do not know about a blood vessel disorder that effects the circulatory system. It is called Klipple Trenaunay syndrome or KTS for short. This is a congenital disorder and is usually characterized by a port wine stain on the skin. This stain is an abnormal growth of blood vessels and is generally quite substantial as varicose veins can be high in number in this area. The cause is unknown as is why it occurs where is does.
This syndrome can be found in both men and women and cases have been seen in every race. KTS can produce a lot of pain so this pain can then limit the abilities of the person who is the sufferer. Unfortunately, this disability will last the length of the person’s life as there is no cure. The name of this syndrome comes from the two French physicians who founded it. Maurice Klippel and Paul Trenaunay first described the causes of this disorder back in 1900. These men told about symptoms and main problems of KTS as connected to malformed lymph and blood vessels. The person who is affected will have pain where this condition is on their body and each case has its own severity. Depending on this severity, treatment options might or might not be needed. The port wine stains is noticed at birth as a pinkish tint that will darken over time. It is actually an abundance of capillaries that can turn into bumps later and the skin can thicken. Varicose veins are also common in KTS because they too are malformed blood vessels. These are the veins, usually in the legs, that are seen as bluish in color and can be itchy. These veins have malformed valves that allow the blood to flow black wards and pool.
For those sufferers who are able to be treated, they have two choices, each to help lower the inflammation and other symptoms. Surgery is one choice but is limited and could create other complication later in time. Partial removal of the affected tissue that are causing pain can be performed. The non-surgical method is preferred but is limited to how well it works. Compression can reduce swelling and help with pain. Massage is the only other treatment to offer help. It can reduce swelling also and redistribute the fluids of the lymphatic system for a natural removal through the urine.
