Pain of the Nerve

The largest nerve in your body is the sciatic nerve. It begins on your spinal cord, low on your back, and goes through the buttock area and then becomes never endings that go down into your legs.  People who experience sciatic nerve pain will tell their doctor about a pain that starts on their back and goes down below their knee. It is when this nerve is irritated by something that is causes this type of pain.  Typically, this irritation comes from a disc herniation that is pressing on the sciatic nerve. This pressure can also cause inflammation and will then produce these symptoms.  Injuries too can cause this sciatic pain as well as tumors, infections, internal bleeding and muscles can cause it also.

Symptoms of this trouble with the sciatic never can be a tingling that radiates from the back down the back of the thigh. There can also be a numbness or a burning sensation. Walking can be hard for those who suffer from sciatica and bending at the waist can be hard also. It seems that lying down is the only relief for this condition.  The diagnosis of this condition comes from a physical examination and a medical history that your doctor will review.  To find the exact cause, your doctor might do such tests as x-rays, electromyogram, MRI scan or a CT scan.

Bed rest is the typical treatment for sciatica but you cannot stay in bed forever. Medications can be taken to ease the pain and inflammation.  There is also medication that will relax muscles and physical therapy can be done also. For some sufferers, a surgical procedure can be done if the sciatica is caused by the compression of a nerve in the lower back. It is possible for those with this condition to feel a cramping feeling in the thigh or a buring sensation also. Some people describe a shooting pain from the buttock area that runs down their leg and other tell about a pins-and-needles feeling in both their legs and thighs. Squatting or coughing can cause a worse pain for some sufferers but this condition is very uncommon in patients of a young age. Sciatica can suddenly show up after a back injury or an over exertion of the spine. There are other conditions that can be the cause of this thigh and hip pain and so they need to be ruled out.
