Hair of the dog

After a night of heavy drinking it’s not uncommon to wake up feeling like you’ll never drink again. Hangovers can make themselves known in various different ways, from nausea to the very common headaches, acute sensitivity to light, fatigue and a feeling of heaviness all over your body, or even a simple lack of appetite. Some lucky people will suffer only one of these symptoms and can probably come up with a solution for it rather easily, but for those of you that experience more than one, or maybe all of them, at once there might be hope.

The quest for the perfect hangover remedy can take you quite a long time, and the best remedy is actually a series of remedies.

The first step is to drink a lot of water. What causes hangover, especially the headaches, is dehydration. Alcohol, in any shape or size, is a diuretic and, as such, will cause plenty of fluids to exit your body. The lack of liquids in your organism will cause your brain to swell slightly, which is what causes the headaches. Some people try to fight hangover preemptively by drinking water either in between alcoholic drinks or by drinking a large portion of water before going to sleep. A careful post-binge-drinking diet will also go a long way in helping with your hangover. Foods rich in vitamin C, like many different fruits, will help you feel better the day before, with the plus that fruits will help you re-hydrate as well. A personal favorite of mine is tomato juice. Not that I’d have the stomach to puree some tomatoes myself while hung over, there was a nice brand of tomato juice in a store next door that I swore by.

As masochistic as it may sound, physical exercise will help you get rid of the toxins and will activate the body’s mechanisms for releasing said toxins. Just remember to keep hydrated. If you’re feeling like there’s no way you’re getting out of bed for a nice work out, the old fashioned aspirin will help you get on your way.

Less used remedies are consuming eggs, because eggs don’t go well with an upset stomach, although they do help with the hangover, and the old “hair of the dog” technique of drinking more alcohol. This works only as a temporary fix, since eventually the symptoms will return, but so many people swear by it you’d think it was the best remedy.
