For others, they will have an attack that will show up without warning and they will end up in the hospital with an intravenous antibiotics and a chance for surgery. This person will have had crampy pain in his lower abdomen with bloating and severe gas pains.
The treatment will be to clear up the infection and inflammation to that is will not progress and cause complications. Each person will have their own severity of symptoms and so bed rest and antibiotics with a pain reliever will be good for many sufferers. If the person feels better in a few day, then a high fiber diet will then begin in a few days. If the case is acute and has complications, then a hospital stay will be required. In the hospital this person will be an IV antibiotic and no food or drink so that the colon can rest and heal. For those rare severe cases, surgery may be needed. There are many high fiber foods with the highest being 9.6 grams which is found in just half a cup of All Bran whole grain cereal. Another 9 grams is found in half a cup of navy beans and 7 grams in a half cup of black beans. One medium apple, with the skin of course, that is where the most fiber comes from, will give you 3.3 grams of fiber and a medium pear, with skin offers your body 4.3 grams of fiber.
If a large abscess, complete obstruction of the intestine or severe bleeding is occurring, then surgery will be necessary. The surgery needed for this type of case will require two surgeries. The first surgery will have a portion of the affected colon removed and to let it rest, an opining in the abdomen will be made. Here the end of the colon will connect to a pouch outside the body to collect stool. Now the colon can heal with no stool going through it. Several months later, another surgery will rejoin the ends of the colon and the opening will be closed.
