A Rash or Something More?

Everyone has experienced a rash at some point in their lives. It may have been a rash, or some other skin irritation. There are many different kinds of infections and conditions that cause skin inflammation and scratching. The cause can also vary, from internal reactions caused by allergies, to topical irritations. Knowing the cause of these irritations is important, as it will determine the type of treatment. Knowing exactly what the origins are will help aid in a speedy recovery, and help to avoid any escalation in the symptoms.

Often we believe that the cause is something external, such as a reaction to lotion, or by brushing against a plant. However, some rashes have an internal cause, and can appear identical to one with an external cause. Such as a cellulitis infection, which is inflammation in the deepest layers of skin, with no external influence. It is often caused as a result of a deep cut or surgical wound, where the skin was broken and the deepest layers have been infected with bacteria. This is not contagious, and cannot be aggrivated externally, although the appearance looks like an normal rash. The best treatment is antibiotics, to help the body fight the infection internally.

Skin irritations can also be a result of an underlying medical condition. Afflictions in the liver can also present symptoms that affects the skin, causing itching, often in the feet and hands.

Superficial irritants have more obvious treatments, topical treatments work best. It is important to pinpoint the cause of the irritation, and avoid contact with that specific product or plant. Once you know what is causing it, you can prevent future occurrences. Treating the existing irritation is the next step. There are many over the counter, topical treatments to help alleviate the itching and dryness that come along with skin inflammation.

If the irritation does not subside, and traditional treatments do not help, consult a doctor. If the rash spreads, and there is any kind of discharge, it could be a symptom of something more serious. It is important to remember that some skin irritations can be contagious, so always consult a doctor when you are unsure of the cause. Rashes can come from anything from stress, to food allergies. If you are unaware of your exact condition, it is important to get a professional opinion. Ask your doctor before attempting any treatment at home by yourself.
